The Overbrook School varsity girls small school division tournament champions include: Ashley Buchanan, Chesna Climaco, Ruth Anne Demere, Emma Forrest, Allison Hassett, Bailey Hunt, Diane Lee, Caroline Sheridan, Sarah Taylor, and Grace Zylstra. The coaches are Overbrook Athletic Director Trey Edmondson and John Osborne.

Parochial league crowns basketball champions 

The St. Joseph School varsity boys basketball team won the Parochial League championship in the large school division with a thrilling come-from-behind overtime victory over St. Henry School.

The Bulldogs of St. Joseph entered the fourth quarter of the tournament championship game, played Sunday, Feb. 27, at Pope John Paul II High School, down 10 points. But they were able to tie the score and force the game into overtime where they won by a final margin of 45-35.

Holy Rosary finished third in the varsity boys large school division and St. Edward fourth.

In the varsity girls large school division, St. Henry beat St. Matthew to claim the championship, and St. Joseph finished third and St. Edward fourth.

In the varsity boys small school division, St. Bernard Academy claimed the championship over Christ the King, with St. Rose finishing third and St. Matthew fourth.

Overbrook won the varsity girls small schools division with a 26-22 victory over St. Pius in the championship game. Overbrook also finished as the regular season champions and an overall record of 20-4. Christ the King finished third and St. Ann fourth.

In the junior varsity girls tournament, St. Matthew won the championship, followed by Holy Rosary 1, second, Holy Rosary 2, third, and St. Henry fourth.

St. Edward captured the junior varsity boys tournament championship, followed by St. Joseph, second, St. Henry 2, third, and Christ the King fourth.

  

St. Rose receives grant for CPR training 

St. Rose School in Murfreesboro recently received a $2,000 grant from State Farm Insurance Co. to pay to train the faculty and staff in child and infant CPR, adult CPR, AED use and first aid. Claire Sercombe and Debbie O’Donald, State Farm employees and school parents, present the check to St. Rose Principal Sister Marie Hannah, O.P.

headed to Davidson County Spelling Bee

Overbrook School sixth-grader Maggie Smith won the school spelling bee correctly making it through 10 rounds of spelling words. She is now headed to the Davidson County Spelling Bee along with runner-up Grayson Riggins.

A spell-off was held in each of the sixth through eighth-grade classes to determine the class champions and participants in the school bee. Students who made it to the school bee are: sixth-graders Maggie Smith and Emily Petroni, seventh-graders Madeline Castle and Tess MacCurdy, and eighth-graders Grayson Riggins and Patricia Harris. These six students competed with one another for an opportunity to spell in the Davidson County Spelling Bee on Feb. 17.

St. Cecilia Academy students win awards at Cheekwood art competition

Three St. Cecilia Academy students recently won awards at the Cheekwood Scholastic Art Competition, Middle Tennessee.

The St. Cecilia Gold Key Award winners were Melissa Manda for digital art and Revel Lannom for fashion design. Hallie Odom won a Silver Key in fashion design.

Manda and Lannon received $1,500 in scholarships to Watkins College of Art, Design and Film as well as $8,000 in scholarships to O’More College of Design.

“I’m really excited about this award,” said Manda, who lives in Murfreesboro. “The fact that there was only one other sophomore that won a Gold Key makes it even more special. It will also get my name out there and I’m especially happy that I won because it’s the first contest I’ve ever entered in my life!”

St. Cecilia visual arts instructor Barbara Gronefeld received a Scholastic Art Teacher pin for her accomplishments in the exhibition. In the past 10 years of the Scholastic Art Exhibition St. Cecilia visual arts have won 23 Gold Key awards, 34 Silver Key awards, one American Visions National Winner award and one Purchase Award, which is on display at the Tennessee Credit Union.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the oldest and one of the most prestigious student art competitions in the country. Past winners include noted artists such as Red Grooms and Andy Warhol. The Gold Award winning pieces will be forwarded to the national level for judging of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, which will take place in New York in March. The Silver Key Award entry will be on display in St. Cecilia Academy theater gallery.

JPII cheerleaders win Jamfest in Indianapolis

Pope John Paul II High School Football and Competition Cheerleaders recently won the Class Champion trophy at the Jamfest Cheer Super Nationals in Indianapolis. Team members include: (front row, L-R) Jacqui Ramos, Anna Buchanan, Jordan Drennan, Amber Darcey, Laura Hickam, Ashton Glenn and Katherine Roy; (back row) Kallie Montague, Taylor Wallace, Nicole Mullins, Ally Jenkins, Elizabeth Klein, Victoria Brasili, Morgan Kennedy, Savannah Davenport, Logan Fletcher, Maria Massa, Chelsea Gettelfinger, Taylor Tieche, Victoria Hickam

The Pope John Paul II High School Football and Competition Cheerleaders traveled to Indianapolis Jan. 14-16 and returned home winners of the Jamfest Cheer Super Nationals competition earning the title of “Class Champion” distinguishing them as the best overall school team.

The cheerleaders also won first place in their division, Large Varsity-Spring Floor division.

Divisions are determined by the number of cheerleaders on a team. JPII competed against 16 other schools including two from the Nashville area, Goodpasture and White House Heritage (also winners of their division).
