Ryan rugby honored for state title

Father Ryan High School rugby coach Keith Burnett and players Tyler Kincaid and Patrick Spray accept from State Sen. Douglas Henry a copy of a resolution passed by the Tennessee General Assembly honoring the team for winning its third state championship in four years last spring. Team members and coaches signed a rugby ball that was presented to Sen. Henry in gratitude for his sponsorship of the resolution. The Irish rugby team finished the 2010 season as the undefeated champions of the Middle Tennessee Rugby Conference and added a state championship cup to go with those won in 2007 and 2009. Behind a smothering defense, the Irish ruggers won both the state semifinal game and championship game by identical 15-0 scores over the Brighton Storm of West Tennessee and Ravenwood, respectively. Kincaid, a winger, scored two tries in the championship game and was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament. Team members included Kincaid, Patrick Spray, Ryan Spray, Henry Alexander, Christopher Agnew, Nick Bateman, Stephen Curran, Sam Hohl, Christopher Marshall, Josh Murray, Stephen Nolan, Cory Norcross, Jason Ogaz, Michael Papuchis, Patrick Van Buren, Wes Wesley, Marshall Billingsley, Matt Bolton, Blake Faimon, Ian Kaszuba, Jake Neeley, Johnny Neligan, Corey Mankin, Philip Hagey, Paul Scaglione, Brian Cain, Will Stewart, Kyle Burnett, Justin Stockdale, Alex Eddie, Ryan Bowden, Brucker Nourse, Lawrence Mellion, Chris Holzmer, Kyle Wyttenbach, Kevin Zoladz, Ian Morrison, Brian Murphy, Richard Havrilla, Robert Kilbane, Casey Maher and Ricky Fisher. Students receive National Merit scholarships

Two recent graduates of diocesan high schools recently were awarded a National Merit Scholarship financed by colleges and universities.

Domenic A. DiGiovanni of Franklin, a 2010 graduate of Father Ryan High School, received a National Merit College Scholarship from Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich. DiGiovanni’s probable career field is economics or physics.

Ryan P. Moore of Gallatin, a 2010 graduate of Pope John Paul II High School, received a National Merit College Scholarship from the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. His probable career field is mathematics.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their winners from among finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who will attend their institution. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

This year 201 colleges and universities are sponsoring about 4,900 Merit Scholarship awards. Sponsor colleges, located in 45 states and the District of Columbia, include 120 private and 81 public institutions.

Father Ryan grad honored in national art competition

Nina Fredericks, a 2010 graduate of Father Ryan High School, earned third place in the 2010 National Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) Multi-Media Arts Contest.

In March, she entered her drawing entitled “Trapped by Poverty” to the Campaign for Human Development and earned the grand prize in Nashville’s diocesan competition. For her national third place finish, she will be awarded $250 that will go toward the Father Ryan Flood Relief Fund and an additional $250 will be given in her name to a CCHD-funded group of her choice.

Fredericks earned several recognitions in the past year, including Commended Student by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for her achievement on the PSAT. While at Father Ryan, she served as a student ambassador and took several AP classes, including AP Studio Art, and her artwork was featured on the covers of Father Ryan’s 2009 Christmas card and the 2010 Baccalaureate Mass program. This fall, she will attend Creighton University, where she received the Presidential Scholarship.
