Statement
We are extremely proud of the Catholic schools in the Diocese of Nashville.
The 22 schools in the diocese serve 6,396 students, with 4,581 students
attending the 19 elementary schools in grades PreK-Grade 8, and 1,815 students
enrolled in the three high schools in grades 9-12. Five new schools have
opened since 1999 in response to growing numbers of Catholic families moving
into the middle Tennessee area.
The Diocese of Nashville has a long tradition of Catholic education. Irish
railroad workers settled in McEwen, TN where a parish and school were
established in 1855. Ten years later, the first Catholic school in Nashville,
St. Bernard Academy, opened in 1866. In addition to dedicated lay teachers, we
are fortunate to have religious sisters from three orders working in our
schools. They are the Daughters of Charity (D.C.), Dominican Sisters (St.
Cecilia Congregation, O.P.), and the Sisters of Mercy (Cincinnati Region,
R.S.M.).
The mission of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Nashville is to promote
quality education in the Catholic tradition.
