The requirements are determined by the Diocesan Office of Ministry Formation Services. The local leadership and management of Catechist Formation belongs to the parish Director of Religious Education and the principal of the Catholic School. The leader initiates this process by:
- Educating the catechists in regard to the importance of ongoing formation and the
necessity of working toward certification. - Offering opportunities for formation either at parish or diocesan events
- Providing guidance to the catechists regarding their selection of formation
events so that their choices fit their personal needs and their catechetical ministry. - Keeping accurate records of the catechists' formation on the Catechist
Certification cards.
- Forwarding the proper applications to Ministry Formation Services

Ann and Monroe Carell Conferences
Through the generosity of Ann and Monroe Carell, the Diocese of Nashville is able to offer two annual conferences at no charge for the formation of Catechists. The aim of the Carell's generous grant to the diocese is that children will enjoy their religious education. Believing that those who catechize our children must continually grow in their own knowledge and enthusiasm for our Faith, Ministry Formation Services uses the grant to provide two conference for the continuing academic and spiritual formation of Catechists.
